A great man said, “If you don’t stand for something, you’ll fall for anything.” In Amarillo, there’s a group that is standing and trying to change the “evil” ways of more than 65,000 people in the Panhandle, from Muslims to Buddhists to Scientologists to Methodists, even Episcopalians. Homosexuals, Masons, New Age believers, pro-choice advocates and the sex industry. No group is safe from the scrutiny of Repent Amarillo.

Now this desire to save people is no longer confined to the Panhandle. The citizens of Houston recently elected Annise Parker as mayor. Why should that affect people more than 700 miles away? Is it because Parker is the second female ever elected mayor in Houston?

Maybe her political aspirations to bring Houston more prosperity in her years in office?

No, Parker being elected mayor in Houston has nothing to do with her qualifications or her political positions. The only thing that matters about this monumental election to Repent Amarillo is that Parker is the first ever openly gay individual elected mayor of a U.S. city of more than a million people. And that is something that cannot be, according to Repent Amarillo.

This religious group claims to be an army for God fighting on the front lines, fighting for Jesus Christ through prayer. However, its “holy war” seems more like an exercise in ignorance and intolerance than a real effort to spread the message of Christianity...

However, its “holy war” seems more like an exercise in ignorance and intolerance than a real effort to spread the message of Christianity.

Pastor David Grisham, director of Repent Amarillo, has called for a boycott of Houston for allowing an openly gay mayor and the largest Planned Parenthood center to be established in the same city.

According to the Web site, www.boycotthouston.com, since the “Christians of Houston” allowed it to happen without taking proper action, and “Have failed to be faithful to the cause of righteousness in Christ Jesus, others must step in and fight the battle that (they) lacked the courage to fight. Now apparently others must “Struggle to rid your city of these two evils.”

Obviously Grisham and his followers are exempt from one of the main pillars of Christianity: to “Love thy neighbor.” The writers of the Bible surely meant “Love thy neighbor as I have loved thee unless thy neighbor elects a gay and allows people to make their own decisions about their lives.” We all must have been reading it wrong all these years.

Here are a few examples of how Grisham and his followers plan to show Houstonians the error of their ways:

Avoid traveling to Houston or layovers while flying. If it is unavoidable, then supporters shouldn’t spend any money in the airport or within the city limits. Supporters of the boycott also should not spend money with companies based in Houston or with online retailers that are shipping from Houston.

Boycott Houston also recommends that if you are offered employment in Houston to not accept it and go elsewhere and to avoid having medical procedures in Houston unless not doing so will endanger your life.

Not only does this ‘boycott’ of Houston seem unfeasible, it also makes everyone in the Amarillo and surrounding area, even those of us not associated with Grisham, seem supportive. This group of extremists is shaping the nation’s view of us. To put it in perspective, Amarillo is the 119th largest city in the United States. Houston is the fourth. Houston is the headquarters for the highest number of Fortune 500 companies outside New York City.

Companies such as Halliburton, ConocoPhillips, Shell. Pennzoil and Kinder Morgan are in Houston.

It’s like this group is trying to bring down a skyscraper with pebbles. Even if the protest reaches 100,000 people, Houston is a city of more than 2.2 million. They aren’t going to make a dent in the economy of Houston.

Strangely enough, in Grisham’s emphatic plea against Houston, nowhere does it say for people in the Texas Panhandle to not sell products and materials to companies in Houston or to turn away customers from Houston. The boycott is completely one-sided, and we are the ones with the most at stake. In this area, there are more people who depend on the very same Fortune 500 companies that headquarter in Houston to feed and clothe their families than there are members of both Repent Amarillo and its boycott.

Instead of being Christlike and helping the less fortunate such as the victims of the Haiti earthquakes or even the homeless in the Texas Panhandle, these people are more concerned about a city 10 hours away. Yet isn’t it in the Bible that no man can judge another, only God?

Let the people of Houston live their lives as they see fit. What we need as a nation is to support one another and not point out the flaws in others while ignoring our own.

Let it be known that we refuse to fall for this intolerance. This is not a topic that will go away if ignored. Groups such as these believe they have the right to tell others they are leading lives that oppose God. Saying people aren’t loved for being different is wrong and should not remain unchallenged. Will you stand up? Or like so many others, will you fall?

I am thrilled to see this article (and intelligent responses) in the RANGER. For a long time it seemed as if the school paper just reflected one, narrowly parochial, point of view (and no, it wasn't "radical far left"). A college publication needs a broad spectrum of ideas, and this fills that bill. We may be going through the motions a lot of the time in pursuit of emplyment credentials, but college is still the place to learn critical thinking. Kudos.

I feel truly honored that the community has come out and left so many comments about this piece. It shows me that while there are some truly hateful so called ‘Christians’ in the world and sadly in our own back yard. There are still people who have morals and respect for their fellow human beings. To the people, who think that they know who I am and what I believe, who have judged and insulted me for expressing a deep concern for the damage that this group has the potential to cause I appreciate that your beliefs call for you to have a concern for my intangible soul. However I never came and insulted you while hiding behind an Anonymous title, I never hid who I was as to avoid prejudice.

I thank you all for your support of The Ranger and for myself as the writer of this editorial. Knowing that there are people here in Amarillo that are willing to stand up to this intolerance makes me able to laugh at the comments about how I am a Godless baby killer who fails at life.

Thank you all

I think this was an excellent opinion piece, and I could not agree with you more.

Religion is not truth or law.... It is only a personal belief. Belief is not fact...belief is subjective and cannot be proven. What can be proven is that Jesus is a (fictional) figurehead for a patriarchal mode of control which subjugates women and minorities, continuing the age old practice of bestowing straight white men with power, prestige and God's "blessing" to go forth, conquer and save the lowly sinners in the Lord's name.

The more time I spend studying Christian history, the more and more grateful I am to be an Atheist. Christainity and all of the Abrahamic religions (Judaism, Islam, Caholicism, etc...) have a sordid past (and present) full of murder, torture, political manipulation, abuse of women, abuse of children, abuse of power, lies, closeted homosexuality, pedophilia, extortion, genocide and cultural defamation. All the while operating under the proclaimed tenets of Love and Service in God's name. Now don't get me wrong, I know that there are many people who are Christian who do great things in the world. But these good deeds could be done under any banner. The good deed comes from the human being who chooses to do it...credit to God is unnecessary and in my opinion, undermines the beauty and power of the human spirit.

Repent Amarillo is the perfect example of an egomaniac using intolerance and maniacal zealot behavior to shame and blame particular lifestyle choices for all the Evil in the world. Well I'll tell you what Mr. Grisham, ... if you truly believe that your spiritually justified intolerance and hate are the way to the Truth and the Light then good luck.

The Bible is just a book. Written by powerful men, for powerful men. It is 2010...and the secular movement of educated individuals seeing all the ways that religion has poisoned the world is growing. I am glad that organizations like Repent Amarillo are helping to speed up this awakening, both in our community and across the country.

Times have certainly changed. First, America's Supreme Court (SCOTUS) ruled 5-4 to block broadcast of federal court proceedings relating to whether California's Proposition 8 ballot initiative banning gay marriage violates US constitutional protections of due process and equal protection so as to protect gay-marriage-ban supporters who feared harassment and threats they had received because of their position. SCOTUS's majority opinion, supported by all four conservatives (Chief Justice John Roberts and Justices Antonin Scalia, Clarence Thomas, and Samuel Alito) together with swing voter Justice Anthony Kennedy,

"notes that some individuals had received death threats, envelopes containing a powdery white substance, confrontational phone calls, threatened boycotts, and vandalism. Some witnesses said they would not testify if the trial were broadcast...."

Now SCOTUS has agreed to consider whether names of people signing ballot-initiative petitions (in this case, to repeal Washington State's same-sex domestic partnership law) should be kept secret "to protect the signers' right to engage in political speech and political association". It seems petition signers in Washington fear "threats, harassment, and reprisals" if their names get released under Washington State public records laws. Ninth Circuit judges had ruled against Protect Marriage Washington's suit, opining that signers hadn't been promised confidentiality and that transparency of elections was at stake, but SCOTUS stayed that ruling pending its decision.

As this second case about protecting anti-gay-rights activists wends its way through SCOTUS, one can almost remember those bygone times when it was gays who worried about violence from homo-phobic straights instead of vice versa. Did these cases really belong in America's highest court? Did blocking broadcast of legal proceedings when everyone already knew who was scheduled to testify really make any sense? Has SCOTUS become completely politicised?

First off the cult here in Amarillo does not speak for everyone and not even a quarter of the citizens here. He is crazy and they tell people who have lost loved ones in war that "they are in hell" and then claim that they had them crying because they felt the power of God. They torment and stalk people who do not agree with them. This group is a cult and certainly does preach intolerance. This group is another Waco group in the making.

Nobody knows exactly what the afterlife holds for us and it's not one person/group's right to judge us and say we're "lost" and a "sinner" just because we aren't Christian, or we don't hold the same views. It really disgusts me. If we could just leave in peace with our own thoughts about things without people pushing us and telling us what we should believe, it would be a much better world.

Okay, after reading all of the comments on this piece... everyone for repent amarillo is judgemental and if I don't follow your "gospel", I am going straight to hell. My God is a merciful God, he forgives my sins. He loves us no matter what. I can't believe that you call yourselves children of God, when you don't even know what you are talking about. Put yourself in someone else's shoes. You don't know what battles they are facing. I'm sure people have received forgiveness from God for things they have done. I read scriptures, too. And Matthew is one of my favorite books of the Bible. "Love your enemy," I'm not seeing any love.

in my opinion, we need to stop talking about this insane group. Grisham is a publicity glutton. He can't do anything in a small way. By causing a stir and giving him airtime, we are pandering to his selfish need to be in the spotlight and also validating these people at a legitimate group, when they are far from it. Treat them like the street corner prophets that they are; don't make eye contact, don't give them money, keep walking, and ignore everything that comes out of their mouths. You can't argue with ignorance.

i appaud you and agree with you whole heartily. It takes guts to write an article on Repent. I also warn you WT wrote an opinion article about this group and it resulted in a comment war. I think its both sad and outstanding that student writers are the ones taking notice of this group. The news stations and newspapers prefer to stay out of it but yet its not going away. They need to wake up and get to the bottom of why this group is truly being able to function and have stuck around this long. . As well it says so much about the young adults that are going to be taking over one day. Maybe in that day and age true equality will be a reality.

The purpose of a newspaper is to arouse the community, to bring forth passion from within our everyday citizens. Looks like we're doing our job.

Good job, Andrea.

Sorry Folks there is no cosmic "get out of jail free" card. We have our life and that is it. Those of you spending your life waiting for the "afterlife" are wasting the life you have, you won't even get the chance to regret it when you die. Believing you have garnered the favor of a deity is a powerful feeling, just like hate and just as useless. Want to make your time here mean something? Help someone, feed someone, educate someone, Create something, write something, love someone, experience...... everything.

How interesting that someone would anonymously post something that starts with, "you are a joke as a reporter one sided left wing !!"

To the anonymous poster, who didn't have the backbone to sign his name, get this: Your illiterate post is responding to a "Staff Editorial." Reporter has nothing to do with it. Left wing, right wing or chicken wing has nothing to do with it. It's an opinion piece.

To the Amarillo College community and particularly the staff of the Ranger: The Amarillo Independent ran an in-depth multi-media series on Repent Amarillo recently. In addition, a couple of stories followed having to do with Repent Amarillo. If you read those pieces, you will get a balanced view of how dangerous this group is. I have concluded they will stop at nothing to hurt those whose beliefs they don't approve.

While they have denied they use license plates to track down and out swingers, information mysteriously appears linking certain people to the swingers club. As recently as this week, people posting on the Globe-News had their screen names revealed by an other poster, emaster101. That's the screen name for Russell Shane Grisham, David Grisham's son. A lawyer finally convinced the AGN to remove those posts.

As to the younger Mr. Grisham, he has a criminal record for computer crime. He claims he doesn't use his "cracking" or hacking skills for evil. Everything he does is in the name of the Lord and to bring people closer to Christ. An interesting investigative piece for Ranger reporters might to to track down the young Mr. Grisham and find out what he is doing with his time.

The entire Repent/Raven group claims that they are warriors for Christ and they use this rationale for their activities. They will also say they do not break the law. They come close and, frankly, I have to wonder if some of the local constabulary cuts them some slack. I believe they think they are above the law, although they may say differently, like the fact they haven't been charged with anything -- yet.

David Grisham frequently refers to how early Christians were persecuted and martyred. I suggest he wants to escalate confrontations so he and his flock are attacked and he can claim martyrdom at the hands of anti-Christian people.

The ProNews7-KVII poll showed a lack for support for Repent at first, but the longer the poll stayed up, the closer it got. The trouble with the poll is that a voted could be counted more than once. I don't know to what extent people really do or don't support Repent/Raven. But they are starting to look a lot like Westboro Baptist Church to me, and I don't think Amarillo wants that label hung on it.

Really this story is so wrong? First you need to realize since obviously none of you ignorant so called christians have noticed this is an OPINION not really sure if you need that defined or not. Also the KVII poll where 62% are with Grisham that's out of 1731 people just so you know there are about 190,000 people in amarillo not even 10% of the total population is being polled.
