“The award is determined based on nominations submitted by faculty and students during the month of March,” said Victoria Taylor-Gore, chairwoman of the final selection committee for the Mead Award. The Mead Award was created in 1988 to commemorate the accomplishments of the second president of Amarillo College, Dr. John F. Mead. Mead led AC during the 1930s and returned as a full-time faculty member during the 1960s.
The Mead Award recognizes an outstanding faculty member each year. The award is an opportunity for students to show appreciation for the effort a teacher dedicates to his or her craft.
Nominations are made by students through submissions of short narratives about the teacher. Standards that students should take into consideration when thinking of a nomination include high level of knowledge, service to the college, student and peer support, classroom tutelage and other factors of distinction that pertain to the faculty member’s field.
Nominations can be made online at http://www.actx.edu/forms/mead. Computer access to nominate is available in any of the Student Assistance Centers and computer labs on all campuses. Only one vote counts in nominations.
The deadline for nominations will be April 5.
The recipient is announced at the May graduation ceremony and is given a plaque and $1,000 as well as a paid trip to an academic conference. The recipient’s portrait is hung in the Hall of Fame on the second floor of the College Union Building.
“We are running out of room on the wall,” said Brenda Sadler, executive secretary to the president.
The 2009 recipient of the Mead Award, Dr. Brian Farmer, and the Student Government Association president, Tyler Adams, will present the 2010 award. Farmer said he received the award with great appreciation.
“Of course, winning the award made me even more pleased to be a professor at Amarillo College,” Farmer said.
“The intangible benefits, however, far exceed the tangibles.”
The Mead committee coordinates and makes decisions about the award process, arranges publicity and oversees the selection process.
The John F. Mead Award Faculty Senate committee this year consists of Taylor-Gore, Dr. Claudie Biggers, Teresa Smoot, Jana Comerford and Becky Burton.
