In almost every advanced society, mankind’s need to be helpful toward the less fortunate is recognized. Amarillo College’s chapter of Habitat for Humanity is a part of that help.

Open to all volunteers who are interested, the group builds houses for those not fortunate enough to have a house of their own.

“This group has had three or four successful build dates and several fundraisers throughout the semester,” said Debra Avara, AC Habitat for Humanity adviser.

Because many hands are needed for the building projects, recruitment is a high priority for the group. One way to get involved is to go to the Habitat for Humanity table at Badgerama April 29 on the Washington Street Campus.

Avara said the group will be one of 200 Habitat for Humanity chapters participating in the National Women’s Build Week campaign May 1-9 sponsored by Lowe’s.

The Women’s Build campaign goal is for 75 percent of the volunteers to be women. Those interested in volunteering are asked to donate four hours toward the cause.

“Habitat for Humanity builds houses around the world for underprivileged families who would not be able to have a home if not for this program,” Avara said.
