The deadline for submissions to the Freelancer publication is March 25. All affiliates of Amarillo College have the opportunity to showcase their talents among their peers. From original poetry to essays, the Freelancer hosts all types of writing.
“This is one of the best opportunities for writers to showcase their talents, get exposure, build a portfolio and get real-world experience,” said Margie Waguespack, an English professor and Freelancer chairwoman. The publication has helped encourage students to enter larger competitions. One student whose work was published was Barbara Logan. She was encouraged by her creative writing professor, Daniel Ferguson, to submit her work to the Freelancer. Logan’s submissions not only won her a place in the Freelancer in 2008 but in 2009. Success with the Freelancer prompted her to compete in a national writing competition, where she emerged triumphant. “It was extremely gratifying to be published and a great honor to represent Amarillo College and the professors who had helped along the way,” Logan said. Faculty members are encouraged to submit works to be considered for publication as well. Dr. William Netherton, an English professor, not only has submitted to the Freelancer but serves on the committee that decides the literary works to be featured. He has some suggestions to aid in writing submissions. “Articles should be kept short due to cost of publication,” he said. “Also, submitting online is becoming more of a necessity with each passing year.” If the writer places as either the grand prize or first prize winner in the Annual Amarillo College Student Writers’ Roundup, he or she will be guaranteed a spot in the Freelancer. The Writers ‘ Roundup will be Feb. 20. Enties for the Freelancer can be sent to any English staff member at www.actx.edu/english or submitted in the English lab in 101 Ordway Hall. Electronic entries in the form of a disk or attached file are preferred. Work should be original and unpublished. Winning entries are determined by a staff majority vote. Copies of the Freelancer will be available at various campus locations as well as at local hot spots such as Roasters and Hastings.
The Freelancer was founded in 2004.
