For the past five years, the Amarillo College Biology Club has had a ticket rally to raise funds for the club. The fundraiser consists of selling tickets and conducting a drawing for various prizes.
The main prizes are reserved parking spots on the Washington Street Campus as well as the West Campus. The parking spots are reserved for the drawing winners for the entire fall semester and are effective Mondays through Thursdays.
The tickets cost $1 each or six for $5. Money raised goes to the Biology Club for field trips, scholarships and other uses.
Promoting the raffle is not limited to Biology Club members. Any AC club member may sell tickets.
Other prizes include gift certificates to Hastings, J Whitney, Beef O'Brady's, Blockbuster, Cold Stone Creamery, Roaster's and Doug Henk's and free food from Pizza Hut, Hungry Howie's, Vince's, Hoagie's Deli, Sonic, Sharky's and Leal's.
Prizes also include four VIP passes to Extreme Martial Arts and four free books from LifeWay Christian Store.
The drawing will be during the third week in September, and the winners will be posted on myAC.
"The winners of the raffle receive the desired parking spots as well as many other prizes," said Biology Instructor Susan Burgoon.
"The interest seems to be growing, especially in the past three years, and the money raised is for a great cause.
"The Biology Club is not limited to biology majors. Anyone can join who has an interest in science."
The ticket rally occurs more than once during the school year. "We've been doing it for five years, once during the fall and again in the spring," said Biology Professor Dan Porter. "Phi Theta Kappa started the fundraiser, then passed it on to the Biology Club, and we've continued it since then."
Faculty and staff members get involved with the fundraiser as well as students. "I was in the Biology Club for several semesters," said biology major Mallory O'Neal.
"We have several fundraisers throughout the school year, but the raffles seem to be the most successful, and we always find a way to change it up a little."
