"We want you," said Rosemarie Hagadus, president of the Amarillo College Badger Hearts, "to join our team for the Race for the Cure. We want to win the largest team award, and in order to do that, we need the help and participation from AC employees and student body."

The 24th annual Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure will be Sept. 29 at Amarillo National Bank, Plaza Two, at 500 S. Taylor St.

The cost for each participant is $20, and teams have to be registered by midnight tonight. The entry fee includes a T-shirt and bib.

"This will be my first race," said Heather Atchley, AC student activities coordinator.

"My mother has breast cancer and has been fighting it for three years. I am very excited the college is putting this team together. It's an important cause."

Nichole Terry, a nursing major, said she is so excited about the race that she went out and bought "Save the ta-ta's" T-shirts for she and her dog to wear during the race.

This year's event will include several activities. The timed 5K competition will begin at 8 a.m. Only the first 45 minutes of the 5K competitive event will be timed. Participants must finish under 45 minutes to be eligible for awards.

The 5K non-timed jog/fun walk will begin at 9 a.m., and the one-mile family fun stroll will start at 9:45 a.m. For those who are not the earlybird type or those who are unable to attend the race, team members are welcome to "sleep in for the cure." The survivor celebration and awards will be at 10:15 a.m.

Proceeds from the race will help fund breast cancer research as well as promote breast health initiatives on a local level.

According to its Web site, komenamarillo.org, the Susan G. Komen Foundation uses up to 75 percent of the proceeds in the local communities where the races are run, helping support breast health education, breast cancer screening and treatment programs for the medically under-served.

The programs are funded based on a special needs assessment survey performed by a Komen affiliate.

The other 25 percent helps fund breast cancer research, meritorious awards and educational and scientific conferences around the world.

Hagadus said 2007 is the first year AC will have a team in the race and that she is excited about putting the team together.

She hasn't had the response she had hoped for, however, and hopes people won't wait until the last minute to sign up.

"I think it's a great way to get involved and meet new people, and it's a way of helping others at the same time," she said.

To join the AC Race for the Cure team, contact Hagadus via e-mail at rehagadus@my.actx.edu or sign up in the College Union Building basement.
