In honor of the sixth anniversary of the tragedies that occurred on Sept. 11, 2001, members of the U.S. Marine Corps performed a ceremony Tuesday in front of the clock tower on the Washington Street Campus.

Colors were presented and "Taps" was performed at 8:46 a.m. in honor of Flight 11, the first of the two planes to hit the World Trade Center.

"Taps" was repeated at 9:03 a.m. in honor of Flight 175, which hit second. At 9:11 a.m., a campuswide moment of silence was observed. "Taps" was performed again at 9:38 a.m. in honor of Flight 77, which hit the Pentagon, and again at 10:06 a.m. in honor of Flight 93, which crashed in Pennsylvania.

Rosemarie Hagadus, president of Badger Hearts, said she was grateful for the Marines' presence on campus.

"I think that it's our duty as American citizens to honor those who left on this day," Hagadus said. "If we don't remember and pay our respects to that, then it would have been in vain."

Flags on campus represented and displayed the names of the 2,977 lives that were lost on the day of the tragedy.

Another flag with the names was displayed on the west side of the clock tower. The Student Government Association organized the event.
