Leave the fur alone
Coats, accessories are distasteful and cruel

People who wear fur not only look ridiculous, but they are wearing some poor defenseless animal draped around their body.
The same people who are wearing fur somehow think they are better than everyone else for doing so.
These people are trying to give off the impression of being rich and important. In their minds, wealth is associated with having at least one mink coat in their closet and being able to wear it to an event to impress others.
The whole concept is absurd. I have gone to many events in Amarillo such as the ballet and the opera, and at those events there always are people wearing fur coats.
They walk around acting as if all eyes are on them and that they are the most important person to ever walk into the civic center or the Globe News Center.
When I see it, I want to go over to them and remind them that they are in Amarillo, not New York City, and they are not impressing anyone - especially me. In fact, when I see someone wearing fur, I look down on her for being so cruel.
One of my best friends entered the Miss Latina Amarillo 2007 pageant. I went to support her, and luckily there were not any people wearing fur that night, which made me happy.
However, the pageant had many local sponsors supporting it, and one of them was a fur and leather boutique.
Whoever was crowned Miss Latina 2007 won gift certificates to local restaurants, a scholarship and a fur coat from the boutique, among other prizes.
When the winner of the pageant was crowned and the owner of the boutique came on stage holding the fur coat, I cringed.
If that had been me and I had just won the fur coat, I would not have put the coat on.
If that meant giving up my crown so I could stand up for something I believe in, then that is what I would have done.
The woman who won hesitated for a little bit, acting like she did not want any part of the coat. I was thinking to myself that this woman was my hero. But to my disappointment, she put it on and posed for pictures.
I am not going to tell people how they need to dress or what they need to wear, but I am asking them to reconsider what they wear.
They should opt for something other than fur when they go out shopping for an outfit or a coat.
