Students and the public will have the opportunity to experience the U.S. Coast Guard Band's excellence on April 26.
A cohesive effort between Amarillo College student services, the AC music department and Civic Amarillo has organized a free concert planned for 7 p.m. in the Amarillo Civic Center auditorium.
The world-renowned band has been a part of American tradition since 1925.
It was organized with the help of Lt. Charles Benter, then leader of the United States Navy Band.
In 1965, President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the congressional legislation solidifying the band as the Coast Guard's official musical representation.
Since then, the band has been one of the five premier service bands of the United States.
The band is internationally known for its excellence. It has performed in the former Soviet Union and England as well as being broadcast in Australia, Japan and Europe.
The U.S. Coast Guard Band regularly performs at presidential functions and for the secretary of homeland security.
The performance at the Amarillo Civic Center will be one of many across the nation. The band is scheduled to play in Louisiana, Texas, New Mexico and Colorado in April, making the Amarillo stop midway through the tour.
Tickets to the event are available in the AC fine arts office.
