As it turns out, the rumors are true that a committee is considering bringing sports back to Amarillo College.
Having sports teams would benefit the college in a few ways.
First of all, enrollment would be boosted. Sports are important to young athletes coming out of high school. Many of them receive scholarships to play sports, and their enrollment would bring state money to AC.
Sports are the deciding factor to many high school seniors when choosing a college. In many cases, Amarillo College probably is overlooked because students cannot play competitive sports while attending. Many good athletes come out of the Texas Panhandle, and they are being recruited to other schools because of sports.
Therefore, AC is missing out on a lot of tuition from students who might consider attending college here if playing sports were an option.
Of course, AC offers intramurals, but students with a heart for competing with other schools don't take those seriously.
Another benefit to having sports is that it would draw attention to AC. Amarillo College would be seen in big newspapers across the state because of sports.
People who never have heard of AC would be exposed to its existence through sports coverage. It also would boost school spirit.
After all the kinks are worked out through the committee, it would be great to see sports back on campus.
