The Anna Nicole Smith scandal has dominated American news headlines for the past month. Someone please tell me, what does that say about the priorities of our society? We have become so obsessed with this trashy entertainment gossip that we now try to pass it off as newsworthy stories.

When Anna Nicole died, I will admit I was somewhat surprised and, yes, I watched the news about her passing for the first few days. I was saddened about her death, because I always have felt sorry for this tragic figure, regardless of the things that came out her mouth and her reported drug abuse.

She was so desperate for fame that she took attention in any form that it came. It also broke my heart when her son died, because no one deserves to go through that. So I find it somewhat saddening that the fame that eluded her for most of her life finally became a reality only after her death.

Now it has been a month since she died. So the question that begs to be asked is: What is with this media circus that is surrounding her death?

These news stations and reporters never cared about her while she was alive, so why the big "hoo haha" now? Why are the latest developments in this story being crammed down our throats at every chance? Who out there still cares?

But Anna Nicole is not the only piece of celebrity gossip turned worthy news story that we hear about. Anytime Britney Spears checks in or out of rehab, which is about every 20 minutes, every news station takes a break for it.

Oh, and Britney, Sinead O'Connor sported your newfound hairdo in the '90s, and look what happened to her. Paris Hilton forgetting to put on underwear is the major story on the nightly news now.

What news station worth its salt can ignore the latest spotting of TomCat in Beverly Hills? And since I gave Britney advice, here is some for you, Tom Cruise: Find someone your own age, you creepy old man!

The media makes Americans look like fools on an international level by telling the world this is the kind of stuff we care about.
