The hard work and achievements at the Amarillo Museum of Art often are overlooked.

Although it is a private organization, the museum shares a partnership with Amarillo College.

"It's definitely an interesting relationship we have," said Graziella Marchiecelli, museum director.

"We make use of each other's resources. It really works out for everyone."

Marchiecelli said being so closely related to the college has many benefits.

"We love being associated with such a wonderful college," Marchiecelli said. "You'd be surprised how good our facilities are for not being a four-year university."

Marchiecelli came from south central Pennsylvania, where she was chief curator at the Southern Alleghenies Museum of Art.

Although she is relatively new to her AMOA position, she considers herself lucky to have so many perks in her job.

"Every day is like a small adventure," she said. "I like going to work and not knowing what is going to happen from day to day."

She already has kept herself quite busy planning upcoming events for AMOA.

From March 9 to March 18, the museum will stage its Panhandle Artists hanging.

The event allows artists of all ages and skill levels to have their work exhibited in a museum setting.

It is free to the public, open to all mediums, and the gallery will accept one work per person. Artists can hang their work from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. March 8 or from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. March 9.

The opening party will be from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. March 9. Cost will be $10, which will include beer, wine and appetizers.

"You don't have to be a painter to love art," Marchiecelli said.

"Even in the business field, you want to be a well-rounded person. Art helps people across different cultures communicate and understand each other better."

The museum offers a variety of workshops and exhibits throughout the year.

The exhibits not only include local talent but many recognizable names throughout modern art history.

"We even have works from some of the greatest artists of the 20th century on display as part of our permanent collection," Marchiecelli said. "It's amazing the quality of the art we have here in our little museum."

One of the most popular events is Third Thursdays. The free event is from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. the third Thursday of each month. Activities include films, live music, gallery tours and art activities.

It is sponsored by Starbuck's, which offers coffee tastings and complimentary coffee.
