A club exists on campus whose work may be seen more often than its members.

The Art Club is made up of Amarillo College students, faculty, staff and alumni. The club meets the first and third Thursday each month in 124 Russell Hall.

Members gather to socialize, discuss upcoming projects and brainstorm.

Nicky Krisch, vice president, said the Art Club has about 20 members. A student does not have to be an art major to join but must be enrolled in at least three semester hours. Other than that, "You have to like art. That's about it," Krisch said.

Different types of artists are involved with the club and its activities.

"Some of us are drawing or painting, and some do graphic design," said member C.J. Rubalcaba.

According to Rubalcaba, the group includes "mainly visual art, but we want anyone to join."

The Art Club provides opportunities to meet new people on campus.

Joining the Art Club is something to consider for those who enjoy exposure to the arts and seek to gain knowledge and insight in the field.

Being in the club, members gain "more experience setting up shows and showing artwork," plus it "looks good on a resumé," Krisch said.

She also mentioned that getting the opinions and insight from other artists is a perk of involvement.

The Art Club takes field trips and has entertaining social gatherings.

"Members of the club visited animation studios and art museums in Houston," said Pete Gonzales, co-sponsor and a graphic design instructor. "We also visited the Dallas Museum of Arts."

Other trips are being planned for club members, including a trip to Odessa March 30-31 for the Texas Association of Schools of Art Conference.

Not only does the Art Club travel outside Amarillo, its members are involved in the local community.

"Last fall we did a workshop for fourth graders at Western Plateau." said Victoria Taylor-Gore, club sponsor and an assistant visual arts professor. "It was a pastel workshop for about 60 kids who had earned rewards."

Other past projects include chalk drawing contests at Wolflin Elementary and Rex Reeves, helping design Evensong at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church and providing the Pediatric Unit at Northwest Texas with a mural.

Members also are involved with numerous art shows and projects around town.

"Graphic design students, art students, and photography students will be participating in the student-faculty art show," said Gonzales.

Members will display their artwork alongside that of faculty members in the show beginning March 30.

The Art Club was a participant in FallFest and also set up a Day of the Dead show in the library last fall. They have shown their work at the Panhandle Art Center in Sunset Center, and some members have displayed pieces in local restaurants such as OHMS.

"We will be helping take down the road trip exhibit in the library on Feb. 23," Krisch said.

The club already has hosted a reception for the artists and their exhibit and aided in setting it up. The Art Club also will participate in Badgerama this semester.
