It's a dog-eat-dog world out there. For many unwanted yet perfectly healthy pets, the only option becomes death, and only because there are more pets available than homes.
According to the Amarillo Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, more than 10,000 unwanted cats and dogs are destroyed in Amarillo each year.
Babydol and Walla won't face that fate, but the dogs still need good homes.
The dogs are available for adoption from Critter Camp, which hopes to open a no-kill shelter soon. Babydol is a 1-year-old female black Labrador retriever.
She came from the home of an elderly woman who no longer could care for her, said Jennifer Headding, assistant office manager at Critter Camp.
"She's a lab, so she's going to be a puppy for a while," Headding said.
Anyone wanting to adopt Babydol should have a lot of energy and be able to show her lots of time and attention.
Walla is a brown and white Chihuahua mix, also about a year old.
"His previous owner brought him back because he suffered from separation anxiety," Headding said. "He's got to get someone who can show him a lot of attention."
Walla would need an owner who either works at home or spends a lot of time at home, or he would need to be crate-trained.
According to Headding, he could make a great pet for someone willing to invest a lot of time and attention.
Babydol and Walla are the only animals Critter Camp has available for adoption.
Fees for adoption are $80 and include shots and a spay/neuter procedure.
Critter Camp hoped to have Critter Haven Rescue Center, a new no-kill shelter, open in January, but waiting to pour a concrete at the new facility has delayed the opening.
The shelter will have dogs and cats that have been surrendered by their owners available for adoption.
The SPCA runs the only other no-kill shelter in Amarillo at 11901 S. Coulter St. The SPCA can be reached at 374-0704.
Critter Haven also will need donations of both time and money, Headding said. For a dog or cat lover who can't keep a pet, volunteering is an option.
"We hopefully are going to be equipped for fostering, too," Headding said.
Anyone interested in adopting Babydol or Walla can stop by Critter Camp, 6105 Rockwell Road, call 655-8444 or visit www.crittercamp.com. Critter Haven Rescue Center will be located at 16500 Betty Blvd., just around the corner from Critter Camp. It can be reached at 557-6222 or by visiting www.crittercamp.com.
