The Amarillo College board of regents kicked off a new semester with its regular meeting Jan. 30 in the Palo Duro Room of the College Union Building on the Washington Street Campus. Board member John Hicks opened the meeting with a prayer.

The regents approved a new lecture room development on the Moore County Campus. The proposal amount totals $102,883 and will not exceed $150,000. Funds for the project are available in the 2006-2007 budget for $100,000. The remaining $50,000 is available in the Moore County reserve fund.

The board also approved restoration of a 1 percent salary increase for AC employees. The increase will take effect March 1 and will cost $137, 259.

Elizabeth Bauman, president of the Student Government Association, presented the student government report, which included the SGA's upcoming plans. SGA members will attend a regional conference Saturday in Midland as well as represent AC at Community College Day in Austin Feb. 22.

Danita McAnally, director of institutional effectiveness and advancement, offered a PowerPoint presentation that gave AC's educational report using a benchmark studies overview. The studies, based on information gathered from 2004 to 2006, compare AC to other community colleges nationally and statewide.

The study pointed out that AC's tuition is at the bottom of the nation and state. Eighty-six percent of AC's classes are taught by full-time faculty, making instructors more available to students. According to McAnally, AC is doing a good job of recruiting new students.

The study also found that Hispanic enrollment is increasing in Texas. AC is no exception with 24 percent of students being Hispanic.

This year, 13 faculty members were recommended for tenure. The board approved the recommendations.

According to the AC faculty handbook, in order to gain tenure the faculty member must have been employed by AC for seven years. There must also be a tenure position open in the department where the faculty member is serving. The faculty member also is required to put together a notebook containing accomplishments and other documents.

Don Abel, Larry Adams, Nancy Brent, Gale Brewer, Carol Buse, Edie Carter, Richard Hobbs, Alan Kee, Mary Clare Munger, Ray Newburg, Jim Powell, Rathna Prabhakar and Henry Wyckoff are among the faculty who received tenure this year.
