The mural will feature a panoramic photograph taken by the late Louise Daniel. The tribute is the brainchild of Kenneth Pirtle, a photography professor and chairman of the visual arts department. It will be funded by donations.
Construction of the 19-foot by 9-foot, square tile mosaic design will decorate the outside south wall of the Student Services Center. The mural will be titled the Louise Daniel Mosaic.
Daniel, a 1951 AC graduate, studied photography with Pirtle throughout her retirement years. She was a member of the college board of regents when she died in 2003 at age 72.
"She was a passionate, energetic photographer who did panoramic photographs of the Texas Panhandle," Pirtle said.
The Amarillo College administration chose the representative picture, a replication of a photograph of Palo Duro Canyon. The mosaic will be in honor of someone whom the administration and faculty want to honor as contributing much to AC and the community.
Daniel was named AC's 2003 Distinguished Alumna. She taught at Olsen Park Elementary School for many years.
"Louise Daniel believed in the importance of education," said Dr. Paul Matney, vice president and dean of instruction.
"We were fortunate to have her as an AC regent. She was an active regent who always wanted to make sure board decisions were in the best interest of our students.
"Louise was loved and admired by everyone who knew her. She was knowledgeable, professional, caring and articulate."
The mural will be a permanent memorial and will be a prominent enhancement to art on campus. Unveiling of the mural is scheduled to coincide with provisional plans for the first night of a Louise Daniel lecture series.
