Interior design students hosted a Holiday Design Gallery Saturday at the Khiva Shrine Temple.
The design gallery was a project of the Amarillo school district interior design student chapter and the Amarillo College Interior Design Club. It also also was a fundraiser for students to go on a trip to Dallas and experience various types of architecture style and structural design.
The gallery consisted of four 30-minute workshops presented by well-known local designers to help get people ready for the upcoming holidays.
"These people are very talented, and they have a lot to present," said Jennifer Hostetler.
The afternoon started out with Jill Parker, an interior design student, showing the audience how to wrap Christmas gifts using inexpensive materials just lying around your house.
"If you ever need any cute, spur-of-the-moment gift tags, all you need is a cookie cutter, scissors, construction paper and a paint pen for writing," Parker said.
One idea was to take a simple cowboy boot and make it into a gift bag. Materials needed are spray paint, cheap tissue paper and a cheap cowboy boot from Goodwill.
The day was just beginning, and it already was time for the crowd to learn how to make delicious holiday appetizers. From the Amarillo Club, Rick Madrigal showed the audience how to prepare "lump crab cakes" and "mild tomato salsa" and how to serve them with the proper etiquette. Moving on throughout the day, the audience was served and stuffed with exquisite crab cakes and salsa with chips.
While getting to stuff their faces, it was time to move onto the next presentation.
When putting up the Christmas tree this year, remember that ornaments can be purchased by the dozen. Different textures cna be used, and feathers are in this year.
"Bling is in," said Nikki Chisum of Panache. Be sure to buy heavier, over-scale ornaments to add depth to the tree.
"Decorating our homes and tables is one of the best ways to accent the season's spirit," said Jay Kirkman of Visage.
There's no place like home, especially during the holiday season, and what better way of bringing that feeling together than with homes attired with the latest look and decorations.
