There were 47 nominees to choose from when a committee selected the winner of Phi Theta Kappa's fall 2006 Apple Award, and Dr. Robert Banks was the recipient.

The Apple Award is an honor Phi Theta Kappa gives to a teacher who has had a significant impact in the lives of students.

Banks fits that description, according to paralegal studies major Heather Reynolds, who has been Banks's student for two semesters.

"He's an awesome teacher, really just incredible," Reynolds said. "He really went out of his way to help me out when other teachers wouldn't. He's a wonderful person."

Banks is a psychology professor and coordinator of the substance abuse program.

"I was excited to receive this award," he said. "It was a great pleasure. It made me feel really good, and it feels good to be appreciated."

"Not only did students vote for him, several of the students on the committee argued very strongly on his behalf based on his impact on them and the way they viewed the world," said Dr. Brian Farmer, Phi Theta Kappa sponsor.

Banks said he was somewhat surprised to be the recipient.

"I went up against a lot of good people," he said. "I was sort of surprised that it was me."

Banks is a 15-year employee of Amarillo College and said he is proud to share the honor of being an Apple Award recipient with past winners.

"This is one of the milestones that we've all been working for," he said. "It's really something special, and I consider myself among really good company.

"I'd like to thank the Phi Theta Kappa organization and all its sponsors and to thank the students who nominated me."
