Class schedules prohibit students from maximizing college experience

Sacrifices always are made when it comes to attending college.

When students start their major classes, the option of taking night classes often is not available.

I have yet to meet a student who doesn't work, whether it is part-time or full-time. With the classes we need to try to build our futures, we end up having to quit a well-paying day job to go to classes in the mornings.

Evening or night jobs end up being the solution to the college schedule provided. We get off these newfound jobs between 10 p.m. and 2 a.m.

When we finally get home, we get our homework done and hope we can steal a few hours of sleep before waking up to start the evil cycle all over again.

Instructors look at us suspiciously as we wander into class late and in clothing that looks like we crawled out of bed, brushed our teeth and sped off to college.

Welcome to the real world. You know, what really "grinds my gears" about this is why there is no real explanation as to why.

We, the students, pay tuition and should be able to attend classes in the evening. Is the only reason a lack of professors? Is it because instructors have families?

If so, the majority of Amarillo College students are parents, too. Single moms, dads and married couples are trying to make a better future through gaining an education, yet there are not enough classes in the evenings.

Classes usually are less than two hours a week and a max of two days a week. Can we really not staff the faculty to help assist students with these classes unless it is considered common curriculum?

I understand that teachers have responsibilities, lives and families of their own, but students do as well.

With more night classes, students' grades would be higher, attendance would be greater and students wouldn't have to drop out of college to pay the bills.
