Forty-nine million dollars is enough to buy a 49 million Wendy's chicken nuggets or enough to renovate the allied health building on the Amarillo College West Campus, add additional floors to the R.E. Byrd Business Building on the Washington Street Campus and pave new parking lots, along with many other renovations.

AC has gathered a task force to discuss its improvement needs and the priority of each project.

The task force is reviewing President Steven Jones' own list of AC's needs and will compile a list of the projects according to priority.

The task force is comprised of 80 external people and 30 internal people, including nominated classified staff, faculty, members of the Administrative Association and others from various campuses.

Considering each of the project plans, the task force will form a report for the AC regents next spring.

Nothing will be decided until next fall.

"Nothing has been approved yet," Jones said.

"Right now we're studying, with careful consideration, what might need to be done."

The total cost of projects that Jones has identified would be $49 million.

If AC chooses to pursue some or all of the projects, funding probably would come through a series of bond issues and with the help of private donations.

The AC Web site, www.actx.edu, includes the following statement:

"As your community college, Amarillo College works hard to bring you high-quality academic and technical programs, plus hundreds of continuing education programs."

AC's mission is to be "...a public community college, dedicated to providing educational, cultural and community services and resources to enhance the quality of life for the diverse population in the service area."

The task force is taking the first step to make sure the mission remains possible.
