From drinks to pills, caffeine never is far from a student's reach.

You can find an energy rush in many things such as tea, coffee, sugar, chocolate, caffeinated soft drinks, caffeinated pills, coffee beans, energy drinks and even mints.

Energy drinks have come a long way in the past few years.

"Before work or school, I go to the store and get something to drink, and I am usually late to class because there are so many drinks to choose from," said Lee Beggs, a general studies major.

There are literally thousands to choose from. You can even buy them in bulk on eBay.

Some of the brands are Red Bull, Monster, Full Throttle, Rooster Booster, Donkey Kick, Amp, XS, Redline, Rock Star and Spark.

"Red Bull and Rooster Booster are some of the popular brands that we sell the most," said Colby Plemming, who works at Toot 'n Totum.

Toot 'n Totum carries so many cold coffee drinks and energy drinks that it has a refrigerated area devoted specifically to them.

"We even have Rooster Booster in a fountain drink," Plemming said.

So what makes energy drinks work?

Most energy drinks are carbonated drinks that have large amounts of caffeine, sugar and additional ingredients such as B vitamins, amino acids and herbal stimulants.

No Doz pills also are big on caffeine. Each No Doz pill contains 200mg of caffeine. A half to one pill contains the same amount of caffeine as one cup of coffee.

"When I am cramming for a test late at night, I either get an energy drink or a No Doz pill to keep me awake and alert," said Chelsea Leven, a nursing major.

No Doz pills are used to restore mental alertness or wakefulness when experiencing fatigue or drowsiness.

There are other options besides drinks and pills. Caffeinated mints such as Foosh Energy Mints and Buzz Bite chocolate energy chews also are popular with the energy-deprived.

Each includes 12 mints or chews in one container. Each container has the same amount of caffeine as 12 cups of coffee, 15 red bulls or 36 cans of Coca-Cola.

"I have tried Buzz Bites, and I have to say that those work the best and even taste the best," Leven said.

As many kinds and flavors as there are to choose from, there is guaranteed to be an energy supplement for everyone.
