Students may not know that there are career and employment services available on campus.

"If you're a student of AC and if you have graduated from AC, you can come and look at the job postings," said Margie Vitale, career service coordinator.

"We have a whole variety of jobs available such as accounting, child care, delivery services, maintenance, office jobs and technical jobs. If employers off campus are looking for part-time or full-time employees, they will utilize our service," said Donna Pergrem, a career assistant.

"We typically will list a position, ask the minimum qualifications, and once we've listed it, we ask them to call us back when it's filled. If they don't call us back, we will call them every several weeks so that when students come in, they know that they are looking at current positions."

According to Pergrem, student assistant positions may be work study or institutional. They usually pay $6.15 an hour, and the student cannot work more than 20 hours a week.

Tommorra Shelton, a paralegal studies major, has been a student assistant for two months.

"When I signed up for the work-study program, I had come here to fill out all my referrals and then I was informed that I needed to go and find a job," Shelton said.

"So I was told to go to the working area and look in the books, and I found out what jobs were available and how to actually apply for the job."

"I answer the phone, help students with financial aid, mail out letters, and I do a lot of filing," she said.

"When a student comes in and they don't have any idea of what to do, we suggest that they take a career inventory assessment," Vitale said. "We have several different forms that we offer; there is an online version or a paper-and-pencil version."

The test is a series of questions that results in a personality profile. It also assesses likes and dislikes, whether the student likes to work outdoors or indoors and whether they like to work with their hands or work with people.
