Check your watches for time management seminars offered at Amarillo College every semester. The seminars are to help students get the most out of their day by going over various ideas that the average person may not even think about.

"One of the most important things is how you actually use your time," said Frances Abernathy, coordinator of employment services.

"We will go over techniques for scheduling and different things you consider on your schedule for the day, week or whole semester."

Whether you are a part-time or full-time student, the time management seminars allow you to get a full overview of things you can do to help your day seem a little less stressful.

One activity at the seminars is the "Pie of Life," which allows students to see how they spend their day by filling in a pie chart of their day-to-day activities.

"Time management is difficult for anybody, especially if you are trying to juggle going to school, work and family," Abernathy said.

Nursing major Dawn Pierson said, "It seems like I never have enough time because of my three kids, and I think this seminar will help."

According to www.keyorganization.com, a person can save up to six hours a week by spending 10 to 15 minutes each morning just mapping out one's day.

"I will stay up till 2 a.m. on a work night trying to get things done rather than making a schedule," said Kathy Wheeler, a student services specialist.

"I think the most common mistake for students and everybody is that a lot of us start out making a schedule but don't use it," Abernathy said.

The time management seminars explain strategies for planning schedules by discussing ideas such as setting realistic goals, allowing flexibility in your schedule and setting clear starting and stopping times.

"It is important to realize that you can't control time," Abernathy said.

"It's really a matter of managing yourself in the way that you use the time you have available."

Study Skills and Test Anxiety seminars also are offered during the semester for students to attend at no charge.

From the "Pie of Life" to "25 Ways to Get the Most Out of Now," you can call 371-5440 to reserve your seat for the next seminar.

Each seminar is conducted for 15 students in the private dining room of the College Union Building on the Washington Street Campus.
