Ask Annie:

Responding to your concerns

Issue date: 10/27/05 Section: Opinion
Dear Annie,

I went out with some friends two weekends ago, and we spent some time with another group of friends, and I met a guy I really like. We talked for a long time and he acted like he thought I was hot and that we could see each other again. He said he would call. That was two weeks ago and I haven't heard from him. What's this about? Should I call him?

Signed, Wondering

Dear Wondering,

It sounds like you had a good experience meeting new people, especially the fellow you are attracted to. However, sometimes a guy will say, "I'll call you," and it doesn't happen. That doesn't keep you from wondering why you haven't heard from him. Perhaps he has a new job; been overwhelmed with classes; had a family emergency ... you get the idea. There could be many reasons you haven't heard from him. When he said he'd call, that was his plan. But for whatever reason, it didn't happen. Calling him might put you both in an uncomfortable situation, unless it's related to a school question or some other reason for getting in touch. Better idea: when you see him on campus or maybe out with friends, be friendly and let him know you'd like to continue getting to know him.

Asking "Why didn't you call?" Don't go there.

Signed, Annie

Dear Annie,

I have been going out with this girl about a year. A couple of weeks ago, she went out of town, and I saw an old girlfriend one night. We fooled aound. The next thing I know, she calls me and says she might have a venereal disease. We didn't use a condom. So does that mean I will get it, too? And what do I tell my girlfriend? I really love her.

Signed, Feeling Guilty

Dear Feeling Guilty,

First, make an appointment for a full sexually transmitted disease (STD) checkup. Be honest with your health care provider. Talk about your recent experience, the reasons you are concerned and any other information given by your ex. Get as much information as possible: symptoms, treatment and prevention of transmission.
