AC student publications win 11 awards

    The Amarillo College student magazine and newspaper won 11 awards, including four first-place certificates, at the annual convention of the Texas Community College Journalism Association Sept. 16 in Amarillo.

    The AC journalism department hosted the convention at the Holiday Inn I-40 East.

    Candice Randolph took first place in the Magazine Journalism Story category for her personality profile, "A Million Prayers," that appeared in the spring 2005 issue of AC Current. Rachel Nelson placed first in Division I Layout and Design for her page on Pope Benedict XVI in The Ranger newspaper.

    Kristy Wedemeyer took first place in Magazine Photography with her color still life photo in the fall 2004 AC Current, and a group of graphic design students placed first in Magazine Non-Photo Illustration for their design showing the use of type in the spring 2005 magazine.

    Second-place finishers were Shelley Kucera for Magazine Layout and Design and Sean Smoot for Magazine Photography.

    Placing third were Mary Ruth Vincent for Division I In-Depth or Investigative Story; Randolph for Division I News Writing; David Kelley for

Magazine Journalism Story; Lacy Cordell, Kucera and Nelson for Magazine Overall Excellence; and Jaklyn Brown and the Ranger staff for Division I Headlines.

     Newspaper Sweepstakes winner in Division I was Tarrant County College, while the Newspaper Sweepstakes winner in Division II was Kilgore College.

Winner of the first Community College Journalist of the Year award was Emily Messer of Del Mar College.
