There are about 126,000 abortions conducted each day.
The argument that there are negative psychological consequences that follow having an abortion often are up for debate.
"It affects them negatively," Gaete said. "They're always going to be thinking about that child they never had."
An abortion is not a singular cause of trauma.
Farmer said, "Yes, abortion has a negative psychological impact on the girls. But so do miscarriages."
The best way to prevent having to make the decision of whether to have an abortion is to take precaution.
"If you're going to be out there having sex, use contraceptives," Gaete said.
Because almost half of all pregnancies are unplanned and premarital sex is more socially acceptable today than in previous generations, the rise of abortion as an escape comes as no surprise.
"When girls are having sex younger and younger, they're more likely to take the quickest way out," Philip said.
