Windsurfing, rock climbing and snow skiing ... oh, my! Students who have an interest in those extreme sports should consider joining the Amarillo College Extremes outdoor club.

Tyler Adams, a graphics design animation major, is the president of AC Extremes.

"We're for anyone who likes an adrenaline rush," Adams said. According to Adams, the club has about 10 members and is looking for more adventure seekers on campus.

The Extremes is a student-run organization that participates in activities selected by the members. Through affiliations with the Boy Scouts, they are able to attend a variety of events and have the opportunities to stay overnight on military bases while on camping trips.

Past events have included mountain biking and snow skiing with the Student Government Association. Last summer, the group took students on a two-day white water rafting trip on the Rio Grande River at Taos, N.M. The Extremes plan a trip to Lake Meredith Sunday, where they will spend the day windsurfing.

Although the activities may seem dangerous, the team is well-trained and supervised by knowledgeable experts.

Lewis Snider, a physical plant maintenance coordinator, is the adviser for the AC Extremes team.

"Whatever we do, there is always safety built into it," Snider said. "I make sure that everybody has the proper training before we do anything." In addition, he tries to ensure that everybody has a good time and that nobody goes hungry on the trips.

"I always enjoy cooking for the students," Snider said. "I'm just not sure if they enjoy the food."

April Sessler, student activities director, said the group gives students more than just a fun weekend activity.

"The Extremes club provides an opportunity for emotional and social growth while also allowing students to blow off some steam after studying for classes," Sessler said.

The Extremes club is open to any AC student who has an interest in outdoor sporting events. The team meets at noon Mondays downstairs in the College Union Building.
