Amarillo College honored Tom Hodges, an English professor, with the John F. Mead Faculty Excellence Award at the 2005 commencement exercises in May.

AC honors faculty for oustanding performance with the prestigious Mead Award.

Each year, nominations are made by students and submitted to the President's Office. A committee determines the recipient.

"I felt surprised, pleased and lucky because so many of my colleagues are just as deserving of that kind of recognition," Hodges said.

In his 39th year at Amarillo College, Hodges said he loves Amarillo and still enjoys teaching.

"Good colleagues have made this time at AC the best job in the world for me," he said.

Hodges has served as chairman of the English department.

Debra Russell, a senior staff assistant, received the 2005 Classified Employee of the Year Award at the General Assembly in August.

Nominations are accepted each year and are based on employee relations, workmanship, improvements to the college and several other factors.

The Classified Employee of the Year Committee selects finalists and conducts interviews in determining the winner.

Russell, a 10th-year AC employee and mother of four boys, co-founded the manufacturing technologies department and has expanded it to include electro-mechanical engineering, welding, industrial maintenance and other programs.

She also serves as a mediator to coordinate several apprenticeship programs throughout the Panhandle region.

"If it's a job worth doing, it's a job worth doing well," she said.

Russell said her favorite thing about AC is the people with whom she works.

"People here are wonderful," she said. "I like my job very much."

Also nominated for the Classified Employee of the Year Award were:

Olga Bustos, Tammy Conner, Cheryl Howard, Jackye Montes, Lisa Proctor, Kerri Pullen and Diane Sharber.
