Shakin' their tail feathers at one o' clock on a Saturday morning may not have been what Amarillo College students, faculty and staff had planned on doing when they volunteered to help in the fight against cancer. That's where some of them found themselves last weekend, however: on a platform constructed in front of the Washington Street Campus clock tower, "bustin' a move" in front of other team members and a panel of judges.

The lip-sync contest was only one of the events at the Second Annual Amarillo College Relay for Life. The relay, sponsored by the AC chapter of Phi Theta Kappa and staged in conjunction with the American Cancer Society, got kicked off with the Pledge of Allegiance and the National Anthem about 6:15 p.m. April 8 and ended at 7 a.m. the following morning.

"We've been working on putting the relay together since last August," said Becky Robinson, relay coordinator and a psychology major. "Now we finally get to see everything pay off."

Seven campus organizations and a group from West Texas A&M University got teams together, raising funds before the event and walking around the makeshift track in the mall area during the event. The Art Club, Biology Club, Classified Employee Council, Phi Theta Kappa, Student Government Association, STARS, SUCCESS and a team from WTAMU consisting of the WT Herdsmen and the WT Lady Belles represented themselves.

Each team member raised a minimum of $100 and spent time making laps around the track, a walking depiction of the idea behind the relay: "Cancer doesn't sleep; neither should our fight against it."

The event was open to the public, and more than 200 people attended, said Thor Hanks, registration chair and an engineering major. "It was an incredible success that surpassed the original relay in every aspect," Hanks said.

Robinson said she was pleased with the outcome of the event. "We had a much better turnout than last year," she said. "We raised more money; I think people had more fun; there was more interaction.
