Every year on April, 1 many responsible, productive adults regress into scheming pranksters resembling the 14-year-olds of their youth.

April Fool's Day is the day that Whoopie cushions are put onto chair seats, schools reportedly are closed and prominent officials resign from office.

It's a day of pranks and jokes, lies and hoaxes, all excused because of the atmosphere of the day.

The quasi-holiday also has a history. "It is considered to be related to the festival of the vernal equinox which occurs on March 21," according to wikipedia.org.

"One time I tied a rubber band around the sprayer on the sink in the kitchen and pointed it where it would spray in my mom's face," said Nichole Terry, a biology major.

Other April Fool's activities carry possible legal ramifications if the prankster is caught.

"You take a piece of Saran Wrap and you put it over the toilet, stretch it real tight so it's nice and clear, then when somebody goes to pee, it just goes everywhere," said John Attebury, a general studies major.

Still other April Fool's Day hoaxes fall somewhere in between.

"My senior year, me and my girlfriend decided it would be funny to tell our parents that she was pregnant and we were going to keep it (the baby) and drop out of school and start our lives together," said Chris Dorsett, a radio/TV major.

"They didn't find it very funny. Her mom almost broke down crying, and mine almost kicked me out of the house.

"After we started smiling and laughing, they figured out that we were joking."

In some instances, April Fool's pranks come back to haunt the prankster.

"My little brother said he got beat up at a party, and the next day it happened," said Lanh Nguyen, a pharmacy major.

Some students, faculty and staff at Amarillo College will be subject to some form of prank or hoax today and will hear those famous words: "April Fool's."
