The children of the Amarillo College Suzuki String Program performed at the annual spring recital Feb. 27.

"We are able to provide a concert for the community by program students," said Suzuki String Program Director Camille Nies.

"This yearly event, usually staged in mid- to late spring, features all students performing pieces selected by the faculty.

"The annual recital is an exciting time for students to collaborate and showcase the year's hard work after a weekend of working with guest clinicians.

"Our Suzuki program is an Amarillo College-affiliated program with ages 3 to 8. We teach violin, viola and cello based on the musical theories of Dr. Schinichi Suzuki.

"We are excited about the work that our Suzuki family has accomplished."

The Suzuki approach focuses on developing the whole child through music.

The Suzuki Association of the Americas (SAA) is a coalition of teachers, parents, educators and others who are interested in making music education available to all children.

"The aim is to nurture creativity, sensitivity and self-esteem and to help children become better human beings and create a better world," Nies said.

According to the AC Suzuki Web site, Dr. Schinichi Suzuki said, "The potential of every child is unlimited."

"Any child who is properly trained can develop musical ability just as all children develop the ability to speak their mother tongue."

"We also have weekly individual lessons, group lessons, play-ins, solo recitals, Orff classes and orchestra and ensembles," Nies said.

The program has operated at AC since 1977.
