Letters to the Editor
SGA not in wrong, just following request of speaker
Issue date: 2/18/05 Section: Opinion

Dear Editor,
In response to last week's letter to the editor, I feel it is my responsibility as a voice of the Student Government Association to clarify anything that the writer of the article or students may have questions about.
The speaker, Ellen Goodblatt, did ask our organization not to video the entire lecture and did in fact ask students attending not to take notes.
However, she did state the reason of her request was for students to benefit as much as possible from the lecture.
Concerning her request, there was no prearranged agreement that no one could take the information from the lecture and write a report on it. We would not have requested coverage of the event otherwise.
I agree with David Kelley that the reporter could have obtained more information. However, it is not the responsibility of the SGA to tell the reporter what and what not to cover.
A reporter is supposed to use their best judgement in a situation like this.
I do not necessarily agree with Mr.. Kelley when he called the speaker's request "obnoxious," because it is my understanding that he himself did not attend the lecture.
