The Student Government Association will host E-Baby, a slam poet, who will be on campus at 8 p.m. Feb. 28 in the College Union Building.
There will be free coffee and snacks for everyone, and the event is free.
Slam poetry is a form of performance poetry that occurs within a competitive poetry event, called a "slam." Poets perform their own poems, which are judged on a numeric scale by randomly picked members of the audience.
"Slam poetry has always had some connection to rap music, with both styles of expression involving rhythmically delivered phrases," said Saul Williams at Wikipedia.com. Its defenders claim that is like saying a poem printed in the finest type on the most exquisite paper will win the Pulitzer Prize, according to Wikipedia.com.
"We are trying to get the English department involved so that the teachers can give extra credit to those that attend," said Nichole Terry, SGA historian.
"We may also have studentpoets perform before or after E-Baby."
E-Baby performed at the Texas Junction Convention Student Government Association Conference.
On March 10, the SGA will host the Comedy Club, featuring Kivi Rodgers.
To become an SGA member, a student must fill out an application. Thirty voting members will determine whether to vote a student in. An applicant must have a GPA of at least 2.0 and be enrolled in at least six credit hours.
"Being an SGA member provides many opportunities for making friends, meeting new people, developing leadership and social skills and making an impact on your campus and community," said SGA President Matt Johnson.
"We coordinate all the activities on campus and take care of all fees and funds for the activities."
