Anticipation is growing in Hereford in anticipation of the fall 2005 opening of an Amarillo College branch in the city 45 miles southwest of Amarillo.

"Better hurry up and open the doors," said part-time student Donna Brooks.

Brooks said she has taken a variety of academic, vocational and continuing education classes, both online, and at various Amarillo campuses, and is eagerly awaiting the increased opportunity of more classes offered closer to home.

"I think it's great that AC will offer any classes here in Hereford that we can support through enrollment," Brooks said.

The branch opening will mean less travel to AC for sophomore Gaby Avina.

Avina, an employee of the Hereford Independent School District, commutes several nights a week to complete course work for a degree in education. "We car-pool, but usually they make me drive," Avina said.

The Hereford opening also has meaning for the broader community.

Community leaders see the campus as a way to continue the recent economic growth in Hereford, according to Dr. Duffy McBrayer, who chaired the steering committee that helped bring the campus to Hereford.

"In the past we've had a few companies look at Hereford and say, 'Great community, uneducated work force,'" McBrayer said. "Now that won't be true."

One great benefit, McBrayer said, will be AC's ability to create training programs for specific businesses.

"If a widget company wants to come to town, we can train employees so that when the plant opens ,the work force is ready," McBrayer said.

Susan Robbins, an alternative school principal, sees the branch as a tool to help her students. "Think of it," she said. "A young mother who before didn't really have a chance for an education ... now, she does."
