The Panhandle Sports Hall of Fame welcomed three new members Sunday in its 52nd annual ceremony at Ordway Auditorium.
Tod Mayfield is the 149th member, Gene O. “Buddy” Cockrell is the 150th and Martha Sutton Pool is the 151st.
According to a news release, the ceremony is dedicated to recognizing sports achievement by active and retired athletes and coaches with Texas Panhandle roots.
After graduating from Panhandle High School, Mayfield went on to play football at West Texas A&M. He set 21 school passing records and led WT to win the Lone Star Conference title in 1986. Mayfield threw a career total of 7,424 yards and 55 touchdowns.
Cockrell is known for his talents in rodeo, football and boxing. At the Texas High School Rodeo Association’s finals in 1953, he was named all-around cowboy. The Pampa graduate also was the top lineman in the Texas-Oklahoma Oil Bowl Classic.
Cockrell played for the University of Oklahoma and later played in the Canadian Football League, for the Cleveland Browns and for the New York Titans.
Pool started making the scene in girls’ basketball in the 1930s, and in 1935 she got recognition from “Ripley’s Believe It or Not.”
During 28 of her games for Happy, she scored 617 of the 942 points.
“In 17 games, she outscored Happy’s opponents by herself,” said the news release.
Pool was named AAU Southwest All-State three times and scored 1,100 points in high school.
She went on to play for Tulsa Business College. Pool died in 1986. Yearly awards also were given at the ceremony.
Honored as Coaches of the Year were Jason Patrick, Tascosa baseball; Krista Gerlich, WT basketball; David Flowers, Bushland football; Rod Been, Gruver golf; Charlie Johnson, Palo Duro soccer; Gary Marable, Canyon tennis; Craig Campbell, Canadian track; Jan Barker, Amarillo High volleyball; and Jason Culpepper, Randall volleyball.
Named Athletes of the Year were Dex Kjerstad, Randall baseball; Austin Johnson, Oklahoma/Palo Duro basketball; Eugene Sims, WT football; Luke Kane, Amarillo golf, Kayla Sisco, WT soccer; Josh Zavala, Texas/Tascosa tennis; Nick Jones, Abilene Christian/Tascosa track; and Kori Cooper, Nebraska/Amarillo High volleyball.
Special Achievement Awards went to Butch Lauffer, WT men’s and women’s soccer coach; Mike Scroggins, Amarillo native and PBA U.S. Open bowling champion; Nick Herrmann, national wrestling champion from Tascosa; and the WT volleyball team, 2009 national runners-up in Division II.
Additional awards were else given to Bennie “Chip” Woolley Jr., Dick Risenhoover Award; Sage Black, Dee Henry Memorial Award; Nicky Rowland, Big Play Award; and the 2009 Amarillo High School volleyball team, Super Team Award.
