Amarillo College has selected Betty Jo Roller as the 2010 Distinguished Alumna.
Roller is a musician and for 30-plus years has taught and directed in Amarillo as well as played violin in the Amarillo Symphony Orchestra.
Tyler Adams, Student Government Association president and a distinguished alumni committee member, said Roller, a 1953 graduate, was chosen based on her contributions to AC while she was a student, her career and her community service.
“All of the applicants had really impressive professional careers,” Adams said.
“But she surpassed them because of her activities while she was here at Amarillo College and her contributions to the community.”
Among many accomplishments, Roller has been named Texas Orchestra Director of the Year.
While at AC, she was a member of the AC orchestra and Sigma sorority as well as performing in a string quartet and choir.
Anyone can submit a nomination for the Distinguished Alumni Award.
Once submissions have been received, the committee reviews the applications and uses a grading system to narrow applicants down to about three finalists.
This year, the final three then were re-evaluated, and Roller was selected.
The award first was presented in 1993.
Roller will receive recognition at the annual AC Honors Convocation at 2 p.m. April 18 in the Amarillo Civic Center Auditorium.
Some of the other AC community members to be recognized at the Honors Convocation will include outstanding students in their majors, members of the honor society and students named to this year’s Who’s Who Among Students in American Junior Colleges.
