The ceremony will begin at 2 p.m. April 18 in the Amarillo Civic Center Auditorium. The public is welcome to attend.
“There are around 547 students nominated this year,” said Joy Brenneman, an executive assistant. “About 220 of those students will attend the ceremony, and around 1,100 to 1,200 people will be in attendance.”
There are 10 categories for which students can be selected and/or nominated. All-USA/Texas, Who’s Who and outstanding majors are the three categories that students are nominated for by faculty members.
“This award is pretty major because a member of the faculty is actually present on stage to hand the student their award,” Brenneman said.
Only one student from each major can be honored. Only two students, Hannah Grice and Kaitlyn Banks, are the recipients of All-USA recognition.
The Who’s Who honor can be awarded to about 15 students, but this year only 10 are receiving this honor.
The 10 are Kaitlyn Banks, Taylor Carroll, Febe Fernandez, Krissy Frost, Gina Graham, Taylor Rebant, Danielle Sherrer, Rita Thomas, Danae Thompson and Michelle Vongkaysone.
Other honors, such as Academic Excellence, are based on students who have maintained a 4.0 GPA with 18 or more hours and are enrolled in six or more hours, which allows for more than one student in each major to be recognized.
Scholarships and awards are given to students from various areas, and the Honors Program gives recognition to its participants who are enrolled in the program.
The ceremony also honors members of Phi Theta Kappa, Alpha Beta Gamma and Sigma Kappa Delta who were inducted through the spring semester.
The Blue Blazers are recognized from both the fall and spring semesters.
Students are eligible to receive more than one award in various categories.
