The renovation plans were derived from a master plan that was completed in 2007.
“We had to look at the domino effect,” said Bruce Cotgreave, physical plant director, discussing the plans for the construction and renovation. “We knew we had to have some swing space, so we had to create the science building first to vacate the biology building.”
The renovation process will begin in late summer or early fall by moving Parcells Hall classes and people into the vacated biology building.
“Moving is a big process,” Cotgreave said, “but I think things will flow smoothly.”
He said Parcells Hall will be completely gutted, leaving only the structure and interior walls.
After it is gutted, it will be brought up to American with Disabilities Act standards and will receive new heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems, electrical, cabling, plumbing, lighting and interior.
“The renovations are a great idea,” said Don Abel, an assistant professor of radio-TV and speech. “It’s a need for faculty and students.”
The new classrooms will be slightly larger than current Parcells classrooms, and the layout will be slightly different. Each classroom will be technologically upgraded to a smart classroom, which will include a projector and screen, computer, ELMO photo imaging camera and an intercom system. The computer network also will be updated.
“The labs will be less crowded, more convenient and more accessible,” Abel said. “The more I think about it, it’s going to be best for students because it will provide a better atmosphere for learning.”
New security measures also will be taken. Camera systems will be installed, and exterior doors will have proximity card readers that will monitor door access. The new intercom systems also will allow instructors to press a single button and automatically be put in touch with campus police.
“The larger labs will be more accommodating and will make it easier for students to work in the labs,” said Brent Cavanaugh, a photography instructor. “Any new facility always brings a positive feeling to the work that you do, and it will translate to the students and make them work better as well.”
The buildings were built in 1968 and have had no renovations since they were built.
“The renovations are long overdue,” Cavanaugh said. “I’m really looking forward to it, and I’m pleased that we had a lot of input on the layout and design.”
The Parcells Hall renovation is expected to take a year. After its completion, the Byrd Business Building will be renovated and also is expected to take a year to complete.
