The Amarillo College Art Club has opened Gallery One O One, a student- and faculty-operated studio gallery at Sunset Center.

Each first Friday of the month, local artists open their galleries for the community to mingle at the art exhibition from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.

People are excited about a new, youthful perspective from fine art and visual art students whose art gets ignored, said fine arts major Alexa Amaya.

“We have more to offer,” she said.

The space for Gallery One O One was donated by Ann Crouch, president of Sunset Center Galleries Mall.

The Art Club pays the utilities and upkeep of the studio with the help of space they have rented to local artists.

“Ann Crouch wanted us to experience running a gallery and managing our own studio,” Amaya said.

She noted that this opportunity gives Art Club members a lesson in the business aspect of art.

Opening night featured artwork from faculty members Stephanie Jung and Steve Cost.

Cost displayed large, framed, handmade paper sheets mixed with objects and textures collaged into spontaneous personal images. The collages and montages are called assemblages.

Jung is a new faculty member in the AC art department.

She paints oil on large canvas as a “re-examination of previous art history.”

Jung’s series of large-scale charcoal drawing works are a style called Enlightenment from the Modernism era.

Art Club President Bryan George said, “We will still utilize venues around town. Workshops, fundraisers and art auctions bring exposure to our work.”

An upcoming fundraiser is in the works.

“One hundred works of art will be available for $25 each,” George said. “Each piece will be a 12 by 12 of varying mediums and expressions of Art Club members’ work.”

Artwork within Gallery One O One will rotate each first Friday. The opening of Gallery One O One was conducted in conjunction with the First Friday Artwalk at Sunset Center Galleries mall located on 3701 Plains Blvd.

Members of the Art Club are students, faculty and alumni who share a community spirit of art. The club meets bi-monthly in 124 Russell Hall. To learn more about the club, contact Victoria Taylor-Gore at vtaylorgore@actx.edu.
