Bruce Beck, a late Amarillo Globe-News writer and editor, has been posthumously honored as the 2010 Friend of Young Children, an award presented annually during the Week of Young Children.

Mayor Debra McCartt presented the award to Beck’s wife, Tanya, at a breakfast Friday at Amarillo College’s Concert Hall Theatre on the Washington Street Campus.

McCartt said she selected Beck after getting to know him through Lunch with the Mayor, a program in which Amarillo fourth- and fifth-grade students dine at the Big Texan restaurant and hear a special speaker to promote success in education.

Beck often covered the program and eventually was invited to be a speaker.

“I would be so proud of his accomplishments and his encouragement of the kids who were fortunate to be sharing a part of this man and his life with them,” McCartt said.

Also during the breakfast, Mary Clare Munger, head of the child development program, announced the creation of a scholarship in Beck’s name.

Munger said she anticipates the Bruce Beck Education Scholarship will be presented each semester to an education major with outstanding community involvement. She said the amount and frequency depend on donations made to the fund through the Amarillo College Foundation.

Beck died April 22 after a prolonged battle with pancreatic cancer.

As editor of the weekly Globe-News supplement “Our Town,” Beck became known to area readers through his community reporting and award-winning column writing.

Donations to the Bruce Beck Education Scholarship can be made through the Amarillo College Foundation by contacting Kathy Dowdy by phone at 806-371-5389 or by e-mail at kbdowdy@actx.edu or Tracy Dougherty at 806-371-5106 or tddougherty@actx.edu.
