With the election less than a week away and several candidates to choose from, everyone must think one of them meets their gubernatorial needs.

There's one candidate Amarillo College students may not be familiar with, however.

His name is James Werner, and as the Libertarian candidate for governor, he believes in taking back the individual liberties that all Texans are entitled to.

"We can restore lost civil liberties, return government to its rightful and limited role and insure a safe and prosperous future for all Texans," Werner states on his Web site.

"As your governor, I will work tirelessly to restore lost civil liberties, I will oppose efforts to expand the size of government and I will fight for your right to keep your own money and property."

According to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, Werner is a software developer and marketing executive for a company that he would rather leave nameless because the company has chosen not to endorse his candidacy.

"I have nearly 20 years of successful business experience in sales, consulting and management," Werner said on his site. "I have worked for companies ranging from small startups to Fortune 100 firms."

Werner says he believes the state should stay out of trying to solve energy issues.

"The involvement of the state in this area will result in higher prices, lower quality of fuel alternatives and poor energy policy decisions," Werner said.

He also believes implementing a new tax can solve the solution to Texas' problems concerning funding for education.

"I propose a 'Fair Tax for Texas,' which will replace all existing taxes with a single, point-of-purchase consumer sales tax on all goods and services," he said. "I also propose initial across-the-board state budget cuts of 10 percent.

"My school plan involves full-value vouchers for parents to be used at any school of their choice. Over time, we will experiment with further free-market solutions to our education challenges."

Immigration is another issue Werner has strong opinions about, as he told the Star-Telegram.

"It's important that there be a rational process to enter," he said. "They need to get a criminal background check, but then anybody who has the desire to work is welcome in my state."

A libertarian by definition is one who advocates maximizing individual rights and minimizing the role of the state, and Werner believes in just that.

"If you are tired of the arrogance of Austin, concerned about your personal freedom and worried about the financial health of Texas, then I am your candidate," he said.
