It takes a lot to bring a campus together, especially without sports and with most student course and work loads. The Amarillo College Common Reader program is working to change that.
This year’s Common Reader selection is Flags of Our Fathers. The nonfiction book, written by James Bradley, is about the group of six soldiers depicted in the famous photograph of the flag-raising on Iwo Jima during World War II.
In May, Amarillo College added Dr. Russell Lowery-Hart as the new vice president of academic affairs.
Before taking the position, Lowery-Hart was associate provost for academic affairs at West Texas A&M University.
After a yearlong process, Amarillo College was awarded a $798,424 grant from the National Science Foundation to start a solar energy technology program. The solar energy technology program will be in conjunction with the wind energy program that began in 2009.
During the summer, the board of regents approved an array of Amarillo College measures including a tax increase, the budget and renaming of the biology building.
The tax increase will affect surrounding property owners in the AC district.
The close of the spring semester culminated with graduation and the announcement of the recipients of the prestigious John F. Mead Faculty Excellence Award for 2009-2010.
In a rare tie, mass communication and speech assistant professor Jill Gibson and Dr. Deborah Harding, a psychology and sociology instructor, were recognized for their service to the college.

The National Youth Theatre announced Amarillo College’s Lamplight Youth Theatre Company as the recipients of a variety of annual awards.
LYT members will travel to Phoenix, Ariz., to accept their collection of awards Sunday.
Amarillo College’s Business and Industry Center campus will host the Entrepreneur Alliance’s annual Business Boot Camp Wednesday for the second time.
Business Boot Camp is the brainchild of those within the Entrepreneur Allience who saw a need for networking and support among aspiring and current business owners of the Texas Panhandle.
