Plunge into the magic of 'Coraline'

Call me crazy, but I always have loved kids movies.  There is nothing that I would rather watch. I think I have all the words to The Little Mermaid memorized by heart.

Lately though, it seems harder and harder to find a movie that gives people that warm, fuzzy feeling a Disney movie used to give you.

While the new children's movie, Coraline, doesn't invoke quite the same feelings as older Disney movies, it still is vastly enjoyable.

Henry Selick, director of The Nightmare Before Christmas, directed Coraline.

Coraline is based on the story of Coraline Jones, a young girl whose parents are too busy with their careers to be the doting parents that Coraline believes she deserves.

However, Coraline soon discovers a magic door that leads to a parallel universe complete with "other" parents who seem to be so much better than what she has. But the place she finds is not exactly what it seems, and Coraline must find a way to leave her "other" family before it's too late.

Coraline is a story that shows us to be careful what we wish for.

The movie is well done, and there are some surprising plot twists. The movie is advertised as a children's movie, but it has some disturbing undertones - something I don't think many young viewers will understand but will shock older viewers.

The movie is in 3D with the two-tone blue and red glasses. Coraline is the first full-length 3D stop-motion picture.

Stop-motion is a film technique that is created by moving a stationary object by small degrees and filming that motion. The movements then are all put together to form one frame in a movie.

Some examples of stop-motion are The Nightmare Before Christmas and Wallace and Gromit. I recommend Coraline for anyone looking for a good movie to watch.

In these trying times, most people want to get the most they can out of the money they spend, and I don't regret the $10.75 I spent.
